Dear
Community Member:
As you may be aware, our school
community consists primarily of low-income families, many of
whom are struggling to feed, clothe and shelter their
children. Ninth St. School educates more homeless students
than any other school in LAUSD. Its families see education
as a means of escaping poverty and opening doors to
employment, stability and success. While their parents
struggle, especially in our difficult economy, they
sacrifice to provide for their children.
Last year’s Holiday Toy Drive,
sponsored by Maintenance & Operations employees of LAUSD,
brought smiles to the faces of fifty of our students as
their received surprise gifts. These children talked for
days about how much it meant that someone would provide a
toy. The M & O staff’s generosity enabled children to have
a special holiday when none had been anticipated.
This year, the M & O staff is trying
to extend this generosity by hosting a charity Car Show
downtown on October 19. I plan to help, along with some of
my teachers, because the proceeds will benefit Ninth St.
students once again.
I hope that you will help sponsor this
special event. Your participation would enable these fine
people, who are donating their own time and money to help
Ninth St., to brighten the holidays for even more of our
students. Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small
group of thoughtful, dedicated citizens can change the
world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Please be among that small group of citizens who change the
world of our downtown children.
Sincerely,
Anne Barry
